Networking

Networking is the process of connecting and interacting with people to share information and build relationships. When networking you should be positive and enthusiastic, a good listener, and sincere.

Networking is important and must be done the right way to be effective! To be successful, you must realize it’s not all about you. Networking features the exchange of information, so even though you may be networking in order to build relationships that will benefit you, you must also consider what you are providing in return. It is definitely a two-way street! Networking became both easier and more difficult in the age of social media. It is easier to connect with people, but there is a lot more competition to do so.

Tips for effective networking:

  • Establish goals – what you do want to achieve and how can you help others?
  • Identify who to network with and where to network – professional organizations, social networks, peers, clubs, community events, alumni groups, etc.
  • Be prepared – dress appropriately, practice things such as your elevator speech or personal branding statement, and draft some questions that you intend to ask others.
Participate regularly in a manner of networking that works for you – some people thrive in a live setting, while others benefit more from online contact.
  • Track your results – back in the day this involved exchanging business cards and then following up with a phone call or e-mail. Now it is essential to connect via social media to share information and create dialogue.
  • Show up, be seen, be engaging, and show others that you are willing to serve.
  • Be present and pay attention – details count! Remember the names of those you meet.
  • Get out of your comfort zone – don’t linger with familiar acquaintances. Make it a point to meet new people.Close
