More people than ever are using the web to search for jobs, network, and identify ways to build their careers. There is so much great information out there that is accessible with just a few clicks of your mouse! While it’s tempting to dive into an online job search, take a minute to consider the risk involved when it comes to sharing your information and connecting with people virtually. To stay safe, make sure you protect your personal information, do your research, and make smart choices given the information you access.
Whether it’s for a job search or your overall social media presence, examine and set appropriate privacy settings related to all of your online accounts. When submitting your resume online or posting it on job-related sites, only include personal information that’s required and absolutely necessary. Do not provide information such as your birthdate, bank account information, or possibly even your address. Many job seekers are limiting the address information they provide on their resumes to city and state. I suggest that you create an email address that’s dedicated to your job search. This will eliminate the connection between your job search activities and your shopping and social media accounts where you share personal information and financial data. The more care you take in protecting your information in this digital age, the better your chances are that sensitive information won’t fall into the wrong hands. This leads us directly to our next point.
Do your research! In some cases, job seekers are vulnerable in that they are under stress as they try to land a job to pay the bills. Carefully examine web-based sites resources that you access, as there are many false websites and job search engines that are designed to collect and then either use or re-distribute your data for sinister reasons. Connect with professionals to learn about reputable recruiters and potential scams. Read reviews and report any illegal operations to authorities. These days, anyone can design a beautiful, professional website. Look beyond the façade to make sure the resource is legal and legitimate. Beware of solicitations you receive via email, or offers that seem overwhelmingly positive or lucrative. In most cases, if it seems too good to be true it usually is, and if you engage it may put you on a dangerous cyber-related path.
While you are protecting your personal information and doing your research, it’s important to make smart choices based on what you learn. Vet all interview opportunities prior to arriving on-site. I know one professional that was told to come alone to an interview, and not to knock when he arrived because they’d be watching for him. Those are major red flags! Some companies will require that you pay money up front for materials or training, which can be awkward, expensive, or fraudulent. Before accepting a job opportunity, get the offer in writing and read it carefully (especially the fine print). Ask mentors and your support network for advice if you are confused or something seems off. Think critically and listen to your gut!
Don’t let the excitement of a new job or the desperation of securing a paycheck cloud your judgement or compromise your safety. Protect your personal information, do your research, and make smart choices. This will help allow you to execute an effective job search that focuses on finding quality opportunities while avoiding scams that can cost you your time, money, and especially your security.
