More people than ever are using the web to search for jobs, network, and identify ways to build their careers. There is so much great information out there that is accessible with just a few clicks of your mouse! While it’s tempting to dive into an online job search, take a minute to consider the risk involved when it comes to sharing your information and connecting with people virtually. In most cases, if it seems too good to be true it usually is, and if you engage it may put you on a dangerous cyber-related path.
While you are protecting your personal information and doing your research, it’s important to make smart choices based on what you learn. Vet all interview opportunities prior to arriving on-site. I know one professional that was told to come alone to an interview, and not to knock when he arrived because they’d be watching for him. Those are major red flags! Some companies will require that you pay money up front for materials or training, which can be awkward, expensive, or fraudulent. Before accepting a job opportunity, get the offer in writing and read it carefully (especially the fine print). Ask mentors and your support network for advice if you are confused or something seems off. Think critically and listen to your gut!
